#TCB: Strings n Woods LIVE- Soulful Sunday at Satva

You are with your friends. They ask you to accompany them to Satva for a nice evening. But you are a teetotaler. And you think what is the point?

But then the mind games begin. You are told there is a live band performing. So how do you say no?

This is my story from last Sunday night.

    Satva
Band ‘Strings N Woods’ performed at Satva

Satva is perhaps one of the oldest night places to hang out in Sector-26, Chandigarh. On Sundays, a local band called Strings N Woods performs. Founded in February 2015, the band performs fairly regularly at various places in Chandigarh and around.

And what can I say? They do complete justice. The band performs a plethora of genres. From Hindi rock to Bollywood to Sufi. You name it and Strings N Woods has got it.

What is most enjoyable is how they link various songs together. Sample this- “Ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si…..ye bhi koi baat hai.”

Their vocalist then says that “baat ye hai ki…” Änd they begin with “baat jo thi ankahi si”

    Strings N Woods
    Strings N Woods

It is amazing how they blend their music so well together. From telling a love story that ends in heartbreak by way of Bollywood tracks…the band offers so much to their listeners.

By the end of the evening, you notice that all the band members have untied their hair. Why??? Headbanging, of course! By this time, the crowd is on their feet. Dancing, laughing, enjoying…and you realize you can have so much fun in one evening even while being sober!

#TCB: Bradlaugh Hall- Buried before being brought to life

Bradlaugh Hall- an iconic building idea came into being before the city of Chandigarh itself. The land allotted for the idea in Sector-15, 50 years ago, is now up in the air.

It was the year 1967, the UT estate officer issued the letter of allotment to the Bradlaugh Hall Trust. The Trust has its office at the Mathura Road in New Delhi.

    Bradlaugh Hall
    Bradlaugh Hall

However, it seems that the project was jinxed from the start. The UT Administration gave generous extensions to the project. Many Chief Ministers and Governors came and went. Most of them associated themselves with the project. But it never seemed to see the light of the day.

Further, this two acre site was given to the trust at a “concessional price”. The land costing 12,000 per acre was allotted at 6,000 an acre. One of the allotment conditions asked for the construction to start within 3 months and be finished within a year. Alas, that never happened.

The Trust never began construction. So the authorities could only ignore it till one point. Then resumption notices followed but on account of political influence with the Congress, the Trust regained the land.

In the early 1990s, the trustees finally sought permission to start construction. They said the delay was because of killing of Jagat Narain’s son and trust secretary Ramesh Chander by terrorists. Jagat Narain was the Trust’s Secretary and a Congress party leader.

Since then to now, the project get kept getting extensions but nothing ever materialised.

    HISTORY OF BRADLAUGH HALL560662f89746f

The Bradlaugh Hall in Sector-15 was supposed to be built on the lines of the same Hall in Lahore. Built on the Rattigan Road Lahore, the Bradlaugh Hall used to host political leaders of undivided Punjab. It was a hallmark of the anti-colonial freedom movement. However, the building is reportedly crumbling now.

The Hall also hosted political sessions, receptions to visiting leaders, and literary sittings or mushairas. It was constructed in memory of Charles Bradlaugh, a British MP. He was a supporter of the Indian freedom movement.

The UT Administration is now contemplating ideas as to what should be set up here.

  • #TCB: Top dishes to try at PU’s Student Centre!

#TCB: Top dishes to try at PU’s Student Centre!

Whether you study here, are an alma mater or have no connection to it whatsoever, you must agree that PU is life. Panjab University or PU as it is fondly called is the pride of Chandigarh. And what makes this place even special is the Student Centre.

Though nobody really calls it ‘Student Centre’. Stu-C, it is. And while you are at Panjab University, do as the Panjabis do. The Stu-C is the “adda” of University youngsters. It is to PU what Central Perk is to Friends. And while you are here, there are some delicacies you should definitely try.

DISHES TO TRY AT STUDENT CENTRE:

    1. Rajma Chawal
    Rajma Rice at Student Centre
    Rajma Rice at Student Centre

Panjabis love it. Non-panjabis love it. So what is not to like about it? The rajma chawal here reminds you of home and swindles memories of childhood. If you are here, you should definitely give it a try. What’s more is that you get loads of varieties to your ‘chawal’. Jeera rice, fried rice- you name it. And if you are not a fan of rajma chawal (which is unfathomable!), you can always try paneer rice or kadhi rice. Like I said, there is something for everyone.

    2. Cheese naan

    Student Centre
    Cheese Naan

THIS is my personal favorite. Piping hot naans filled with cheese topped with melting butter. The mere thought of it is bound to get your mouth buds salivating. Served with gravies to die for, the cheese naan here is a complete meal in itself. If there is heaven on earth, it is here, my dear friend- the cheese naan at Stu-C.

    3. Chinese platter

    Student Centre
    Chinese Platter

Not a big fan of Indian food? Fret not! We have got you covered! The Chinese platter at Stu-C is at your service. It consists of crispy spring rolls, steamed momos, fried rice, chow mien, kimchi salad, gravy…The platter is a mini Chinatown on a plate! How can anyone say no to it?

    4. Oreo Shake

    Student Centre
    Oreo Shake

It would be a SIN to come to Stu-C and not drink this amazing shake. The Oreo Shake is a chocolaty shake topped with Oreo crumbs. Chocolate and Oreos is a match made in Heaven and NOBODY says no to it. If you don’t mind the extra calories, you can also add a scoop of ice cream to it! Then there is also a brownie shake…Decisions. Decisions.

    5. Brownie with ice cream

    student centre
    Brownie with ice cream

If you think the brownie at your favorite haunt is the best, wait till you try it at Stu-C! The sight of melting vanilla ice cream on a steaming hot chocolate brownie…This is so satisfying. And wait till you take your first mouthful, the way it melts in your mouth leaves you asking for more. If this doesn’t make you happy, nothing ever will!

So what are you waiting for? Your evening plans are now sort!

#TCBNews: Subway in Chandigarh- not a distant dream!

If all goes well, the city of Chandigarh is set to receive its first Subway! According to media reports, the UT administration is planning this highly anticipated project. The subway in Chandigarh will connect Rose Garden in Sector-16 and the Sector-17 plaza.

    subway in chandigarh
    subway in Chandigarh

The tender documentation is complete for the subway in Chandigarh, according to the administration officials. Hence, the tenders will be floated by January 12. The project is being seen as an initiative under the Smart City project. The Smart City mission has been launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The city was not able to enter this list in the first round.

    Connectivity:

The officials say that the revitalisation of Sector-17 is a priority for Chandigarh’s Smart City tag. With the easy connect between the two places, the footfall will increase.

“When Rose Garden would be connected to Sector 17, at least 80 percent people who come to see the garden would definitely want to see the Plaza as well. To ensure that they don’t need to walk much, e-rickshaws would be introduced,” says a senior official.

For Sector-17, that does not see much visitors now, this will prove to be a new lifeline.

The engineering wing of the administration has also floated tenders for Subway in Chandigarh to develop the area near the Football stadium. Officials say a viewers’ gallery will come up near the stadium. Food courts, walking tracks, a cultural center are also in the pipeline. The cost for the project is currently estimated at Rs. 12 crores. Six bids have already been received for the same.

The surface parking lots would also be converted into green spaces. This is one of the main aims of the Smart City mission.

The UT Administration has already got a communication from the Ministry of Finance. The city will get Rs 100 crore for the smart city work in 2017-18.
