  • Chandigarh’s boxer wins first National Youth Boxing Championship!

Chandigarh’s boxer wins first National Youth Boxing Championship!

Boxer Sawan Gill’s story seems like straight out of a Bollywood movie. Seven years ago he started boxing. At first, he competed in the 40 kg category. Then every year the weight category kept increasing. Seven years until now when he finally competed in the 91 kg category.

    National youth boxing championship
    National youth boxing championship

But that is not all. As soon as Gill boxed in this category, he also became the National champion. That’s right. The last five years saw no youth nationals for boxing in the country. Why? Well, mostly because of internal politics and red tapism. But 2017 is different. India held its first ever All India National Youth Boxing Championship. It was organised by the Boxing Federation of India in New Delhi. And this was all the motivation Sawan Gill needed to come out on top. He defeated Himmat of Services 5-0 and was crowned the champion.

Gill shares his experience with me. He says that the last couple of months were difficult. He has been training intensively and the results are for the country to see. Gill trains at the Boxing Training Centre in Sector-42. All of 16 years, he has an interesting anecdote to tell. He tells me that earlier this month he had lost to Himmat in the School Nationals. This takes me by surprise and before I can ask he replies- “I trained extremely hard after my loss. A win over a Services boxer has surely helped me boost my lost confidence.” he smiles.

His smile still has that childlike innocence despite his tall frame. He is 6’2 feet tall and a student at S.D. Public School, Sector-32. “I have been gaining weight and this also one of the reasons why my category keeps changing year after year. But I have learned to adjust. I am just happy that this win has guaranteed a spot in the National team and I will be attending the National camp,” he shares before he signs off.

Well, talking to him surely leaves one inspired and confident that this young pugilist will surely leave a mark.

    Good luck, champ!

  • #Entertainment: Comedian Amit Tandon performs in Chandigarh!

#Entertainment: Comedian Amit Tandon performs in Chandigarh!

Comedian Amit Tandon recently performed in Chandigarh at the Panjab Arts Council in Sector-16. However, the most surprising part was not a lot of people seemed to know about it. But when you enter the venue you realise that it is simply not true.

The place is thronging with people, mostly newly married couples who are here to see him. Fun fact: Chandigarh is the only city in his current tour that had two shows. One show was at 5 pm and the other at 7 pm. Interestingly, both shows were sold out.

    Comedian Amit Tandon
    Comedian Amit Tandon

Comedian Parminder Singh was the opening act for Amit Tandon’s show. He took the audience on a ride to his childhood bringing out parallels between his upbringing in Amritsar and his cousin’s in Delhi. He also talked about Panjabi’s fascination with going abroad that left the audience in splits!

And for the act of the evening- Amit Tandon was his usual charming self. His stand up revolved around his married life. Talking about his one wife and two children, he interacts with the audience and you realise that watching videos online does no justice to such artists’ talent. To be there and witness the show live is an experience in itself. The ambience of the place gets so positive that the sounds of laughter become music to your ears.

The audience doesn’t realise that soon the time is up and we have sat through an hour and a half laughing our hearts out. It is time to leave but not without meeting with him first.

He has to get ready for his next show but he is kind enough to come out and talk to you, let you interview him and even take pictures.

So what is one advice he has got out for someone who would like to be a stand-up artist?

“Be yourself. Don’t try to be like Johny Level or someone else. You are unique and that is your USP, cherish that.”

  • #TCB: Mistakes in Raees you probably missed!

#TCB: Mistakes in Raees you probably missed!

So, I hope you are enjoying your extended weekend. Like many, you must have also enjoyed a movie. After all, it was a Clash of the Titans- Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil and Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees.

Everybody has their opinions for both the movies. If you are someone who has watched Raees, chances are you probably missed these mistakes in the movie. Surprised? If you think it was a flawless movie, well, hate to break it to you, but that is not true.

So here are some mistakes from the movie listed out for you (WARNING- Spoilers ahead!)-

    1. SRK and Mahirah’s child

Remember in the movie, before the interval Mahirah tells SRK about her pregnancy? Well, not exactly tells him but more like a melodramatic “apko koi abba bulaye toh?” dialogue. And after the interval, one year later, their child is born? Wait. What?! That is not what my Eighth standard biology textbook taught me.

    2. The “RDX”

After the bomb blasts take place, SRK’s aide tells him that the gold with which it was smuggled carried a new kind of RDX called RDX. WHAAAT? An RDX called RDX? Really? Wasn’t RDX a chemical element’s name? Seems like the whole team of Raees flunked Science together.

    3. Musa’s killing or any other action scene for that matter

This problem is not with Raees but probably every Bollywood movie ever. How is it that all your sharp shooters miss their marks while shooting the hero? And on the other hand, the hero can probably get India an Olympic gold in shooting? Whatever happened to the laws of probability? Law of averages? Scientists and mathematicians died for your sins!!

    4. The encounter of Raees aka SRK

This is probably the dumbest part of the movie which is sadly also its end. So Nawazuddin Siddique wants to carry out a fake encounter of Raees. He has lost faith in the system and so far and so on. But why did you shoot him in his heart straight away?! Aren’t policemen first meant to shoot on their legs to immobilise the accused on the run? And take them to the hospital and get them to the jail? But no, he just shoots him like 4-5 times on all critical body parts! Dude, you will land in jail instead of Raees!!! So much for being an IPS officer. Meh

Well, that is it I guess. My disappointment with Raees right there- a conceptually good film ruined by poor scripting and execution.

  • Elante revels in the Republic Day spirit!

Elante revels in the Republic Day spirit!

Well, the stage was all set. Republic Day. City Beautiful. And rain.

You know what that means right? The city people thronging Elante mall, of course! It is raining cats and dogs as you enter the mall. But you stop, just for a second, because the entrance looks so ravishing. It is a replica of the India gate in the capital city of Delhi. What makes it more beautiful is that it is adorned with the colours of the National Flag.

    Republic Day
    Republic Day

But that is not all. As you enter, you are in for a visual treat. There is sand art (Yes, SAND ART!!) that salutes our army persons. It also wishes the spectator a very Happy 68th Republic Day. It instantly reminds you of Sudarshan Patnaik, the famous sand artist of India. You think this is something he would do. But you are not on the windy beaches of Orissa, remember? You are in a mall. And this is just the beginning.

You look further, there is a cut out of the Indian map. It looks so breathtakingly beautiful that you simply cannot take your eyes off of it.

And then you look up. There are decorations up to as far as the eye can see. All of them in the colour of our beloved Tiranga, of course. Your heart swells with pride.

There are kids who are enjoying events related to the R-Day. There are games, music and fun but all painted in the colours of patriotism. You can either choose to revel in the beauty of it all or take selfies and pictures with your family. Or even choose to be a part of this celebration.

This is not just a “holiday” like cynics like to portray it. People may be out enjoying but that too, in the spirit of the country.

In that moment you realise, patriotism is not something you shove down the throats of others. Because it already is an inherent part of you, whether you realise it or not.
