The UT Administration is considering a sky dining proposal where the first such restaurant will be opened at a height of 165 ft with a capacity of 24 persons at any given time.
UT Adviser Manoj Parida said the project was under consideration to give a boost to the tourism sector in the city. He said they had identified three locations — Sukhna Lake, Kaimbwala village, and Leisure Valley — to start the project, but the Forest Department raised objection with the sites at Sukhna Lake and Kaimbwala. He, however, said a final decision on the terms and conditions and the site would be taken in a meeting soon.
Daman Kapoor, MD, DSH Bliss Adventures Pvt Ltd, who proposed to give a new experience to people in the city, said it would take 90 seconds or less for the foodies to reach the height and come back. Their safety and security would be the utmost priority, he said, adding that a group of visitors would stay mid-air for nearly 40 minutes. The price of the ticket would be finalized in a meeting with the UT officials, which could be in the range of Rs2,500 to Rs4,000. He said they could start the restaurant as soon as they get the approval from the Administration.
A Hot steamy cup in hand and some fuzzy socks! Isn’t this the best winter combination? As we, Chandigarhians lay in the laps of the outer Himalayan mountain range, we get to feel the vibe of sunny sun and the frosty winter, at the same time. If you had spent a December in Chandigarh, you know what I am talking about!
You can easily spot some grandma enjoying the winter tan on the Manjha (Khaat) outside their homes; Men sleeping on the warm grass under the shade of a tree in the day. And at the night, even the three layers of clothing won’t protect you from getting cold. “Aisa hai Hamara, Chandigarh”
As it begins to chill down outside, and the temperatures dropping with each passing day, the lust for the fancy and warm winter food and beverages begins to shoot up the sky. Gajar ka halwa, Panjiri, Desi ghee ki Peeni, these names come fluttering inside our brains when it comes to winter food, but nothing can make the list of winter beverages except Chai Or Coffee.
We bring you the list of some easy to whip, Classic Indian winter beverages! Sober-Style. We will bring a compilation of boozy beverages soon! Till then, We hope you will enjoy the winter weather with these warm winter drinks.
1. Kashmiri Kahwa
Kashmiri Kahwa
This beverage has earned its position at the top of the list. Officially Kahwa might have Kashmir as his home, but this drink never leaves the hearts of the people who try this authentic recipe. My first cup of Kahwa was inside a hut of the shepherd family in the valley of Gulmarg near Srinagar. The recipe has been one of my go-to ever since for all those warm, romantic winter nights.
Kashmiri Kahwa is a tropical mix of Kashmiri green tea leaves poached in water with whole spices, Almonds, dried fruits, and saffron. This aromatic drink is the perfect pause to all your early morning winter woes. It has been a part of Kashmiri cuisine for centuries. Apart from fighting the winter crisp, this beverage is also packed with a load of health benefits which include improving digestion, weight loss, enhancing immunity, and many more.
2. Kanji
Kanji
Kanji is one not so warm beverage that made this list. Although it is a classic and is mostly available in winters. Think of Kanji as Indian Kombucha. Rich in antioxidants, dietary fibers, Vitamin K, vitamin C, Potassiums, and the list goes on. We made a point that kanji has numerous health benefits. It is made from the Kaali Gajar (Deep Maroonish colored carrots) which are a delicacy of winter. It’s a fermentative drink, hence has to be made in a glass jar or ceramic. The aluminum, brass, copper would inhibit the fermentative process and will give the bitter taste. The beverage can be stored in a glass pitcher for up to 15 days if kept outside, and up to a month if stored in a refrigerator.
The beetroot, Mustard powder, asafoetida, red chili powder, and salt are added to them to make this drink yummy-licious.
3. Rajasthani Bajre Ki Raab (Pearl Millet Drink)
Bajre Ki Raab
This Beverage has two versions- Both Salty and Sweet. This beverage is quite famous in the state of Rajasthan. It is made from Pearl millet flour a.k.a. Bajra. The sweet version has Jaggery and is served as dessert. Bajre ki raab with sometimes is commonly called Rabdi as well, made it is slightly different from the one we savor will jalebi.
The Salty version has Cumin, Ajwain, and of course Salt! Both are made from yogurt rather than milk.
Bajre ki raab is known to be very nutritious and delicious. In the desert regions during summers when the vegetables are in short supply, people make raab like a soup with dried vegetables like Ker Sangri to dip the Rotlas.
4. Dhoodh Kesari
Dhoodh Kesari
At least once in your childhood, your mum has tricked you into drinking Kesar value Dhoodh saying “Beta, Superman Bhi Yahi Peeta hai”
Well, Clark kent might not have been drinking this beverage in his time on the earth, but most Indian pehlwan’s have. This beverage is loaded with health and nutritional benefits.
The Warm milk infused with the richness of saffron and cardamom, topped with shredded almonds and pistachios is North India’s winter favorite drink. This should be declared as an Offical drink of winter. When was the last time, you had Kesar Milk? Let us know in the comments down below.
5. Noon Chai or Gulabi chai (Kashmiri Pink Chai)
Gulabi chai/Noon Chai
Another tea hailing from the sierra of Kashmir. The recipe might be a little tricky, but the end product you get is worth the wait. The Kashmiri Pink tea s made from special Kashmiri tea leaves called Gun powder leaves. (No! it’s not the Plant from where Barood comes from!)
The gives a natural pink color, but let’s be honest, you won’t get the color at the first trial. I got the right color, on my third try. Third times a charm! The pink color comes from the reaction of the chlorophyll released and for that, you have to cook this beverage intensively. Further sea salt, very little milk, and nuts are added to this beautiful Gulabi chai. One sip of this tea will make your heart sing “Vaidh gulabi, chai Bhi gulabi, Dawa Bhi gulabi, hai gulabi yeh asar”
Which of these will become your favorite DIY winter drink? Did we miss out on some other classic Indian winter beverages? Let us know in the comments below!

A nice little cosy place located in the inner markets of Sector-16, I finally gave French Press Cafe a chance. A quiet Tuesday afternoon, the place looks almost deserted save the exception of 1-2 tables. But since it is a small place, it looks very comforting and pleasing to the eye.
French Press Cafe, Sector 16
First impressions of French Press Cafe:
The place looks lovely for an intimate conversation over food. The servers are courteous and friendly. But the service in itself is very slow. But that is okay for me since the waiters tell you that the dish will take time. It also allows you to squeeze in some extra conversation if you have time on your hands.
What we ordered:
Pasta Alfredo with greens and a Verdure pizza. For beverages, my partner ordered a Darjeeling tea while I settled for a Caramel Iced Latte. Our pasta arrived first. It was piping hot and delicious. The cheese sauce was so perfectly well balanced that we ended up wiping our dishes completely! However, the bread served with it is a bit of a letdown. I’ll prefer a classic garlic bread over theirs any day. My Latte had arrived too. But it doesn’t look anything like your expectations. I expected my Latte to be laced with caramel on top, but sadly there wasn’t any. But the taste makes up for it.
The Latte tastes great! My partner too seems to be thoroughly enjoying her Darjeeling tea. The next on the list is pizza Verdure. And it looks heavenly! The taste sadly does not match up to how good it looks. However, it tastes good nonetheless. It is light, fresh, crisp and has lots of veggies. Sadly, we weren’t able to finish it all up so the staff graciously brown bags it for us.
Verdict:
I have heard a lot about this place and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Further, the chefs graciously subtracted all kinds of mushrooms from their dishes since my lunch date is allergic to them. Would I want to visit this place again? Probably. I surely want to try out their desserts!
The Pizza Hut – Elante is unlike any other fast food joint. Why? Because it doesn’t look like one. It looks like an informal restaurant. There is one waitress at the front who is taking care of everything. She is guiding you to your table, handing you the menu, getting you water, taking your order, serving it to you, cleaning your table in between courses and handling the bill counter. Phew! And all this while serving all the other tables!!
What we ordered:
Since we were two people, we ordered a King Size meal. The King Size Meal consists of the main course, an appetiser and a beverage or a soup. For soup, we ordered Cream of Mushroom. It was quite a treat for my taste buds. Generally, vegetarians like me end up having the likes of hot n sour or manchow soup. But this soup was very nicely prepared and certainly did not feel like you were eating at a fast food chain!
Next, we had a veggie supreme pizza along with cheesy paneer pockets. The pizza, if you ask me, if amongst the better ones served at fast food joints. It was fresh, cheesy and had loads of toppings. The edges too were really soft and not floury at all. However, the big let down of the meal was the paneer pockets. I honestly tried it with the view of experimenting instead of having the usual garlic bread. But boy, do I regret it. It was really messy to eat and did not add much flavour to the entire meal at all.
Other than that, I suppose I was really happy with my meal.
Verdict:
Would I come here again? I am not sure. Maybe. Do I prefer it over other multinational pizza chains? Definitely.

Frequently touted as one of the most happening places in chandigarh, today I’ll be reviewing the very famous Peddlers 35. A personal favorite, I consider this place as the daddy of all the pubs in town. It is one of the oldest bar/pub in Chandigarh and as they say Old is Gold. Situated in the basement, the interiors resemble that of every tavern they show in English sitcoms.
The bar is fully stocked most of the times and the cocktails are heavenly- especially the long island iced tea and pina colada. They also hold live sports screening at times so if you’re a sports fan then it is the perfect place to catch up on a match with your friends while drowning yourself in beer or whatever it is that you prefer. *hehe* The only downside is that alcohol is a little expensive but they have a 1+1 offer on some of the drinks so it makes more sense to order those specific drinks for a pocket friendly experience.
Peddlers 35
When it comes to food, Peddlers 35 preparation is quite nice and even the most basic dishes have a different and ingenious touch to them. I got fan of their pizzas especially the piri-piri pizza..sigh! pure bliss. They have a variety of cuisines to offer including Italian, Mexican, Indian and continental so there is a lot to choose from. I will not say that the food experience is out of the world or anything but it’s pretty decent.
Live Band at Peddlers
Coming to the highlight of Peddlers 35, the live band performances in the evening are electrifying and induces a whole different level of energy and craziness in this place. Be it a Monday or Saturday, the music will never disappoint you as they have the best bands playing all 7 days of the week. Once the band starts playing, it is quite impossible to have a conversation so only visit in the evening if you are in a mood to party because there are people dancing everywhere as soon as they are into their third or fourth song.
The only thing lacking in this place is S-P-A-C-E as it gets congested as soon as it gets a little crowded. Every inch of the area is occupied by people either sitting or standing or for that matter even dancing so it’s always better to make a reservation in advance especially on Saturday to avoid inconvenience and if you’re one of those who just likes to party without caring two hoots about seating then just grab a drink from the bar counter and dance away to glory.
Peddlers 35
A great place to chill with friends. I give it 4 stars and 2 out of those 4 stars are purely for the mind-boggling live music experience they offer.
Gone are the days when only sector 17 and sector 35 served as an oasis for all the “happening” and trendy hangout joints. But today so many cafes, bars, lounges and restaurants have mushroomed all over the city that we chandigarhites are spoilt for choices. The current phenomenon that has taken the city by storm is “sheesha” or “hookah” as it is popularly called and all the hookah enthusiasts can be found flocked at Sector 26 which boasts of 4-5 amazing hookah lounges. The one that I shall be reviewing today is called Purple Frog which is located right in the middle of the sector 26 market stretch that runs parallel to Madhya Marg.
Purple Frog Bar – The Hookah Lounge
Being a hookah fanatic myself, I have been a regular customer of Purple Frog in Chandigarh for the past one year and it has not disappointed me even once. The USP of this place lies in the fact that it has so much to offer- they’ve got the best hookahs in town, a full bar, live band performances every evening and lip smacking food. There are hardly any places in town that serve you both alcohol and hookah which is what makes it a hit amongst the youngsters.
Their facebook page reads “It’s not just a lounge, It’s a froggy destination” and they have done complete justice to that tag line. As the name says PURPLE frog, the interiors are quite quirky with dim purple lighting that sets the perfect ambiance for hookah. There are private seating spaces available for people who want to get away from the crowd and the loud music. The bar is fully stocked most of the times and they always have pocket-friendly offers on alcohol throughout the day. Every night there is a live band performance which starts at somewhere between 9 to 9:30 pm which always delivers foot tapping music. The schedule regarding which band of what genre is playing on which day of the week is updated by them on their facebook page everyday so you can always check what you’re in for before visiting the place.
Stage area in Purple Frog
The food is pretty good with nonveg starters to die for especially “drums of heaven” and assorted “murg tikkas” of all kinds. And finally, I don’t know what sorcery they do with their hookahs which make the flavor last for a super long time so you can just sit there puffing away to glory for a good 1.5-2 hours while your server changes the coal regularly- Yes! They are very particular about that.
Although I really don’t find any major flaws or cons with the place but yes there are a few glitches here and there like some people might not particularly enjoy the extremely loud music which the DJ plays, although the playlist is quite decent with heterogeneous music ranging from sufi to hip-hop. Also, the seating is a bit congested which poses a bit of a problem, especially on Saturday nights when the place is packed with the crowd. The staff is courteous and friendly but the service can be slow at times which is a downer for most people.
All said and done, Purple Frog in Chandigarh is a complete package with the variety of services and amenities that it offers and is also not very heavy on the pocket. Our expenses after my most recent visit came out to be Rs 2850 for four people which included one hookah, 8 bottles of beer(they had 1 plus 1 offer on the beer we ordered) and 2 non-veg dishes. So come on people! Do the math. In my opinion, this place is definitely worth a visit if a crazy and fun time is what’s on your mind.
