Five years after the Union Home Ministry rejected the proposed project in Chandigarh, RITES has come forward with a recommendation to move forward with the new project.RITES has been asked to suggest the best public transport option for Tricity in march for a comprehensive mobility plan UT Administration.

Proposed Plan for Chandigarh Metro Rail 2009

In 2009 first metro rail was proposed for Chandigarh and a detailed report was prepared in 2012 with a budget of 1.5 crores. The initial metro track was 37km for Chandigarh, 7.8km for Mohali, and 6.41 for Panchkula was proposed. In 2013, the first phase was to begin but was interrupted by Kiron Kher(MP). She stated that the project is viable for a small city like Chandigarh. In 2017 the project was finally rejected by the home ministry. In August 2021 plans were made by MRTS with the UT Administration to go for new mobility plans.

Chandigarh Metro Rail Project Revs Up

This is the second time RITES has been requested for the Chandigarh metro rail proposal, having been denied in 2009.

The proposal submitted to UT Administration by RITES suggested that a total of 64 km of Metro network will serve the demand of major directions of traveling in Tricity. According to Public Sector Undertakings, the Chandigarh metro rail project will be implemented in two phases.

In the first phase, there will be three passages in Chandigarh with a total length of 44.8 km. In this 16km of metro rail will be underground and the remaining km shall remain elevated.

Sarangpur and IT Park with places like Khuda Lahora, Panjab University, Sectors 7, 8, 26, and Housing Board Chowk will be covered during the first phase of passage. 7.3 km would be underground, the remaining 10.5 km would be elevated.

The second passage will be 10km in length which will cover sectors 1,17 and will stop at sector 51. 8.7km will be underground and the remaining will be elevated.

IT Park, Sector 26, and sector 38 of Dadu Majra will be covered during the third proposed passage. 17km of the track will be elevated.

During the second phase, 13 km of the metro rail to be extended to Mohali and 6.5 km to Panchkula. It is said that the metros of these two cities will be elevated.

In Mohali, sectors 52,62 will be covered. For Panchkula Dhillon Cinema Chowk and will stop at Sector 21.

PSU survey stated that attention should be paid towards secure, reliable connectivity for the people residing in Chandigarh for the year 2041. Additionally, the survey layed emphasis on the low-carbon mobility plan and the focus on the current transport system and upcoming demands for public transport.

A survey was conducted by RITES which stated that 88% of the people will still go in their private vehicles if Chandigarh metro rail was available.

Central Pollution Control Board stated that stubble burning in neighboring states, higher relative humidity, and poor sunlight could be reasons for changing the air quality index. The atmospheric conditions increase fog and cause smog which adds up to low visibility.

Earlier, this month air quality has seen major changes from going to moderate dropping to poor quality. As the temperature will drop Chandigarh air quality index will drop causing more problems for the people.

The Indian Air Force and Chandigarh Administration have taken all the important aspects for the convenience of everyone and all the measures have been taken place for the visitors on the sukhna lake.

Chandigarh University Students Protest Over, Uni Will Be Closed Till Sept 24
Students of Chandigarh University in Punjab’s Mohali ended their protest in the early hours of Monday, Sept 19, over a woman student allegedly recording and sharing “objectionable” videos of other women students. This happened after the university administration assured that their demand for a fair probe will be fulfilled, said the police.

The university on Monday suspended two wardens for negligence and also declared holidays till September 24.

Further, it formed a joint committee comprising students and senior functionaries to address certain issues pertaining to hostel timings and other demands of the students, sources in the varsity said.

What Did Mohali Police Said About The Protest

“They (students) ended their protest at around 1:30 am,” Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Vivek Sheel Soni said.

He told reporters that a special investigation team headed by a senior police officer will be formed to probe the case. An FIR under Section 354-C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act has been registered in the matter and further probe is on, police said.

Chandigarh University To Remain Shut Till 24 Sept

The university will be closed till 24 September, and two wardens have been suspended for negligence over the matter. On Sunday, the police had confirmed that they had arrested three suspects in the case.

1. A 10-member committee of students will be given updates in the case.

2. The WARDEN of the hostel – where the incident happened – would be suspended.

3. A checking of the girls’ hostel would be done.

Here Are The Latest Updates About The Protest
- The stir ended at 1:30AM on Monday after the assurances from the concerned authorities at the Chandigarh University. The university will remain closed till September 24.
- 3 people – a girl student of the varsity and two men – have been held so far in the matter amid huge public anger.
- A third accused was held on Sunday night in the case – a 31-year-old man from Shimla. This was after a 22-year-old girl student and her 23-year-old friend were held.
- No suicide attempts took place.
- A couple of girls fainted that are in good health now.
- CM Mann ordered a high-level probe for the case.

Intriguing storylines, appreciable performances, distinguishing voices and glimpses of various fascinating forms – a theatre festival is supposed to bring us all of this. Chandigarh, Tricity people, a new intriguing experience is awaiting for you all. The Azmat-2022 Theater Festival by Impact Arts will start from September 10 and will last for three days. This is going to be a great platform for the performances and who are aspiring to make their career in theater.

This fest is being organized in collaboration with Punjab Kala Parishad. The group organizes five theater festivals every year, including Azmat. Apart from the city, artists from Patiala’s group will also perform and talk about various aspects of life through these plays.

Name of the play – The play Ishq Remix, which is written by Davinder Gill.
Director – Iktar Singh
Group – will present the artists of Chandigarh School of Drama.

3. 12 September

Name of the play – The play Aadhi Raat ke Baad, written by Dr. Shankar Shesh
Director– Baninder Jeet Singh Bunny
