A total of 6,47,291 voters, with a majority from the 20 to 29 age group, will decide the fortune of the candidates on the polling day. The votes will be counted across the country and result will be declared on 4th June 2024.

    Vijay N Zade, the chief electoral officer from Chandigarh, told the residents to verify their names on the electoral roll by visiting “ceochandigarh.gov.in”, or the Voter Helpline App or the voter helpline number 1950. Also, residents can fill out Form 6 to enrol in the electoral roll through the Voter Helpline App or voter portal, or simply hand over the form to their respective booth level officer. He said, ‘Form 6 should be submitted at least 10 days before the last date of nominations, which is May 14.’

    In 2019 Lok Sabha Election, BJP’s candidate Kirron Kher won the seat in Chandigarh constituency for the consecutive second time. Kirron Kher received total 2,31,188 votes while the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat saw a voter turnout of 70.62%.

MC Chandigarh has opened several RRR centres in the city where the people can donate the old or unused stuff for the needy people. Alongside MC opened various One Rupee Store in Chandigarh, where needy people can buy the donated stuff at a little cost of Re 1.

    This initiative is taken to promote the concept of 3R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The people can buy any item from these One Rupee Stores whether it is a suitcase, T.V., décor items, gent’s trousers or women attires, these stores has it all.

    Mayor Kuldeep Kumar inaugurated the seventh One Rupee Store in Chandigarh, in the presence of area councillor Manaur and other senior officials of the MC and ward members. The store was opened at the Community Centre of Sector-56. The mayor on the occasion said,” MC’s permanent RRR centre in Sector 17 has received an overwhelming response from citizens, enabling establishment of this store. The store offers a variety of items such as clothing, crockery, kitchenware and toys – all priced at Rs 1 per item.”

    The aim behind this initiative is to provide affordable items to those in need and promote the RRR drive. The MC stated that only good-quality and functional things are available in One Rupee Stores. The stores will offer garments, footwear, décor items, toys, electronic items, crockeries, books, furniture & wooden items, bed sheets, mobile cases etc. and much more.

    Municipal Corporation has set up its permanent RRR centre at New Bridge Market, near Jagat Cinema in Sector 17, where citizens are encouraged to donate items that are no longer in use to them. Additionally, MC’s ‘Swachh Sawari’ mobile RRR vans will collect items from the homes as well. Only after cleaning, repairing, and refurbishing of the donated items, these are made available in One Rupee Stores in different areas/wards of the city. The seventh 1 Re store is opened at Community Centre, Sector-56, while the other six stores are operational in- Dhanas, Manimajra, Maloya, Sundar Nagar, Ramdarbar and a Special store for Safaimitras. These stores have collectively sold near about 15000 items to the needy people.

    Municipal Commissioner, Ms Anindita Mitra, expressed her gratitude towards the citizens of Tricity for their overwhelming response and support. She told that, ‘this is the 7th successful store and the MCC is committed to serving the community by establishing more such One Rupee Stores throughout the city. The launch of this store is MCC’s efforts towards creating sustainable and inclusive practices that benefit citizens from all walks of life.’ She said that,” the MCC is showing its commitment towards promoting sustainability and inclusivity with opening of these kind of stores in the colony areas of the city.”

These e-buses will be replacing the old diesel buses with aim of reducing carbon emission in the air.     Insights about new Electric Buses in Chandigarh

    UT Transport Department has planned to replace diesel buses with 100 new Electric Buses on Tricity routes. The decision was taken after the first meeting of State-Level Steering Committee (SLSC). During the meeting it was apprised that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has allocated 100 buses to Chandigarh under the centrally sponsored PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme. Accordingly, it was decided to replace 100 diesel buses with Electric Buses in Chandigarh.

    The committee was informed that CEPT University has submitted a revised bus and service plan for the city, along with a procurement strategy for 2022 to 2031. The committee notified that phase-wise procurement plan was made keeping in view the replacement of buses, increase in ridership and strengthening of fleet for city bus services.

    The committee gave its nod to strengthen the unit of city bus operations with the addition of 70 more buses on the Tricity routes under the PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme. These buses will be covering the routes of Mohali and Panchkula as well.

    • The new electric buses will be 12 metres long, as compared to current ones which are 9 metres long.
    • More people can accommodate here, creating less hassle and avoiding overcrowding.

    • The electric buses will reduce pollution and make travel cleaner and environment friendly.
    • As per the transport department, electric buses run around 76.22 lakh kilometres in a year, and the UT is expecting a direct annual financial benefit of Rs 18 crores.
    • As per this project, the Chandigarh administration only provides conductors and the expenses of the driver, while the maintenance cost of the bus is completely on the company providing electric buses.
    • The shift from diesel to electric buses will make the authority save around Rs 19 crores annually on fuel.
    • Since the routes are busy, the electric buses will be plied accordingly to provide better transport facilities to the passengers.

    Presently UT Administration has 80 E-buses and all are running for Chandigarh only. Additional buses will be bought for Mohali, Panchkula, and other connected routes as well to avoid over loading.

    By 2027-28, the UT Administration is planning to replace all old diesel buses with electric ones. It will be a step forward for providing better services and environment caring.

    CEO of CSCL Anindita Mitra along with ACEO Anisha Shrivastav and area councilor Saurabh Joshi, inaugurated the construction work of “Zero Waste Modern Food Street.” On 12th March 2024 the project kicked off and is expected to complete within next 6 months. A budget of Rs 1.17 crores is passed for the project which is funded by the National Health Mission of the Government of India. It is an initiative taken to promote healthy and fresh food choices with Modern style and No-Waste of eatables.

    Features and Highlights of the Project

    The Zero Waste Modern Food Street comprises of several attractive features such as:

    • Benches with Sheds
    • A Cycle and Walking Track
    • Display Boards with signages and symbols
    • Attractive ornamental lights
    • Proper placing of Bollards
    • Landscaping work
    • Twin Dustbins for waste management

    • Water ATM for public

    Anindita Mitra addressed that these features will be provided to the people for their convenience and use.

    Ms Mitra said, “the Zero Waste Modern Food Street in Sector 15 will serve as a model for sustainable urban development. It will not only provide a vibrant and appealing space for residents and visitors but also promote eco-friendly practices and healthy food choices.”

    She further highlighted that, “the Zero Waste Modern Food Street will enhance the overall aesthetics of Sector 15 and contributes to the well-being of the community. She urged residents and visitors to support this initiative and help maintain a zero-waste environment.” She added that some of the highlights of the rejuvenated food street will be Zero Plastic, Differently Abled Friendly and only for Non-Motorized Transport.

    Area Councillor Saurabh Joshi emphasized on the importance of collaboration and community engagement in the project’s success. He said, “the Smart City works closely with residents, local businesses, and government agencies to ensure that the Zero Waste Modern Food Street meets the needs and aspirations of the community.”

    ACEO Smart City Ms Shrivastav quoted, “construction of the Zero Waste Modern Food Street will be completed within the next six months. Once finished, it will stand as a shining example of sustainable urban development, showcasing Chandigarh’s dedication to creating a greener future.”

    This creative and resourceful initiative will help the locals to enjoy the flavors of street cuisines without worrying about the hygiene, quality, foul odors, and parking hassles. Not only this, but also covered drainage, no water blockages, proper constructed paths and eco-friendly community participation will be highlighted after the completion of the project.

    Mandatory Guidelines For the Chandigarh Air Show

    The Indian Air Force and Chandigarh Administration have taken all the important aspects for the convenience of everyone and all the measures have been taken place for the visitors on the sukhna lake.

    • Firstly, you must bring a valid photo ID proof along with the entry pass. Without these, you will not be allowed to enter.
    • Secondly, there will be earmarked parking spaces across the city where people with the bookings will be asked to come and park their vehicles.
    • Then, show the QR code issued on the entry pass while boarding the shuttle bus.
    • And from there, buses will take them to their designated locations at Sukhna Lake
    • Buses will bring them back to the designated parking areas after the show concludes.
    • The shuttle service to not be allowed after 2 pm.
    • The air shows will be open on both the days for general public.
    • Expecting the heavy rush the department has made a limited seats of approx. 30 thousands on 6th October.
    • And on the 8th October, there will be more restrictions.

    Chandigarh University Students Protest Over, Uni Will Be Closed Till Sept 24

    Students of Chandigarh University in Punjab’s Mohali ended their protest in the early hours of Monday, Sept 19, over a woman student allegedly recording and sharing “objectionable” videos of other women students.  This happened after the university administration assured that their demand for a fair probe will be fulfilled, said the police.

    The university on Monday suspended two wardens for negligence and also declared holidays till September 24.

    Further, it formed a joint committee comprising students and senior functionaries to address certain issues pertaining to hostel timings and other demands of the students, sources in the varsity said.

    What Did Mohali Police Said About The Protest 

    “They (students) ended their protest at around 1:30 am,” Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Vivek Sheel Soni said.

    Chandigarh University will remain shut till Sept 24

    He told reporters that a special investigation team headed by a senior police officer will be formed to probe the case. An FIR under Section 354-C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act has been registered in the matter and further probe is on, police said.

    The university will be closed till 24 September, and two wardens have been suspended for negligence over the matter. On Sunday, the police had confirmed that they had arrested three suspects in the case.

    • A third accused was held on Sunday night in the case – a 31-year-old man from Shimla. This was after a 22-year-old girl student and her 23-year-old friend were held.
    • No suicide attempts took place.
    • A couple of girls fainted that are in good health now.
    • CM Mann ordered a high-level probe for the case.

The civic body has assigned duties to four employees to visit the park and public places in the city and get pet dogs registered. Panchkula Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal said the dog registration fee was fixed at Rs 500. The owners of unregistered pets have to pay Rs 500 as fine. He said the fine amount would be increased to Rs 2,000 in the next MC House meeting.

    In a move to promote the welfare of pet dog owners in Chandigarh, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has integrated online registration facility through ‘Im Chandigarh’ App for pet dog owners. Through registration, dogs can be protected by getting them vaccinated for rabies by a certified veterinary practitioner and maintaining the vaccination record is a must, MC commissioner said.

    The UT MC has warned citizens of action if they fail to register their dogs. They clarified that if the owners do not pay attention to this, they might have to loose their dog to Chandigarh MC. Apart from this, the Commissioner appealed to dog owners to vaccinate their pets for rabies as well.

    People residing in Chandigarh can get their pet dogs registration done through ‘Im Chandigarh’ App. Follow the below mentioned process by which you can get your dog registered with Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

    ONLINE PROCESS

    • First and foremost, download the Chandigarh Smart City Limited app, ‘Im Chandigarh’, from Play Store.
    • Secondly, create an account if you are a new user.
