Insights about new Electric Buses in Chandigarh

UT Transport Department has planned to replace diesel buses with 100 new Electric Buses on Tricity routes. The decision was taken after the first meeting of State-Level Steering Committee (SLSC). During the meeting it was apprised that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has allocated 100 buses to Chandigarh under the centrally sponsored PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme. Accordingly, it was decided to replace 100 diesel buses with Electric Buses in Chandigarh.

The committee was informed that CEPT University has submitted a revised bus and service plan for the city, along with a procurement strategy for 2022 to 2031. The committee notified that phase-wise procurement plan was made keeping in view the replacement of buses, increase in ridership and strengthening of fleet for city bus services.

The committee gave its nod to strengthen the unit of city bus operations with the addition of 70 more buses on the Tricity routes under the PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme. These buses will be covering the routes of Mohali and Panchkula as well.

Perks of new Electric Buses in Chandigarh

• The new electric buses will be 12 metres long, as compared to current ones which are 9 metres long.
• More people can accommodate here, creating less hassle and avoiding overcrowding.
• The bus will have special feature that will make the passengers get on and off easily, especially the ones with disabilities and old-age passengers.
• The electric buses will reduce pollution and make travel cleaner and environment friendly.
• As per the transport department, electric buses run around 76.22 lakh kilometres in a year, and the UT is expecting a direct annual financial benefit of Rs 18 crores.
• As per this project, the Chandigarh administration only provides conductors and the expenses of the driver, while the maintenance cost of the bus is completely on the company providing electric buses.
• The shift from diesel to electric buses will make the authority save around Rs 19 crores annually on fuel.
• Since the routes are busy, the electric buses will be plied accordingly to provide better transport facilities to the passengers.

Presently UT Administration has 80 E-buses and all are running for Chandigarh only. Additional buses will be bought for Mohali, Panchkula, and other connected routes as well to avoid over loading.

By 2027-28, the UT Administration is planning to replace all old diesel buses with electric ones. It will be a step forward for providing better services and environment caring.

She further highlighted that, “the Zero Waste Modern Food Street will enhance the overall aesthetics of Sector 15 and contributes to the well-being of the community. She urged residents and visitors to support this initiative and help maintain a zero-waste environment.” She added that some of the highlights of the rejuvenated food street will be Zero Plastic, Differently Abled Friendly and only for Non-Motorized Transport.

Area Councillor Saurabh Joshi emphasized on the importance of collaboration and community engagement in the project’s success. He said, “the Smart City works closely with residents, local businesses, and government agencies to ensure that the Zero Waste Modern Food Street meets the needs and aspirations of the community.”

ACEO Smart City Ms Shrivastav quoted, “construction of the Zero Waste Modern Food Street will be completed within the next six months. Once finished, it will stand as a shining example of sustainable urban development, showcasing Chandigarh’s dedication to creating a greener future.”

This creative and resourceful initiative will help the locals to enjoy the flavors of street cuisines without worrying about the hygiene, quality, foul odors, and parking hassles. Not only this, but also covered drainage, no water blockages, proper constructed paths and eco-friendly community participation will be highlighted after the completion of the project.

Satellite Imagery System:

Satellite imagery system will be going to use to improve the property tax system. Chandigarh’s Municipal Corporation department said that this system will provide a database to government authorities and this will help to increase their efficiency by providing a highly accurate base map. The MC has written to the chief architect department of the Chandigarh administration to provide satellite imagery from National Remote Sensing, Hyderabad for physical measurements. According to the sources notice dates, period, information of rebate period and penalty period will be fixed in the app in such a way that every property tax payer gets information on time.

Mobile App For Tax 

From June 1, 2018, around 23,000 commercial tax payers of the city will able to pay the tax through a mobile app and from this date they will start getting alerts and dates of tax payments on their mobile phone. This work will be done by the Noida-based GIS Consortium India Private Limited and the work to this company has already allotted. The cost decided for this project is 1 crore and they will survey the city by next week. This selected company will complete this work with in a year. This system will computerize the taxation department of MC and all records will also be computerized.

The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) has recorded 100 micrograms per cubic metre (mcgcu m) of repairable suspended particulate matter (RSPM), which was higher than permissible limit of 60 micrograms per cubic metre.  But this project of Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) has hit a roadblock.

Negatives Of The Chandigarh Electric Bus:

After this trial, the 11-member inspection committee has noted some shortcomings in the electrical bus that was on the road for two-week long trial. After making the report of all the shortcomings officials of CTU on Wednesday in a meeting with the representatives of the manufacturer asked them to remove the defects. Some Problems with the electric bus are:

• The report said that this bus was unable to run for one shift of seven hours.
• An ordinary bus can cover a distance between 230km to 250km in a single shift but this electric bus covered only 180 km a day on single charge, carrying 1,750 kg.
• The bus encountered the problem of manoeuvring on turns and this is because of the battery is fitted on the roof.
• The battery also faced difficulties in charging.
• Fluctuation in voltage makes it unable to charge.
• The report also pointed out poor quality of suspension.The bus lacked air suspension.
• The high initial cost of the bus is also a negative aspect. The bus will cost around Rs 2 crore, while an ordinary bus of a similar size is available for around Rs 30 lakh.

Positives Of The Bus:

There are also some positives that are included in the reports and that is the Zero emission and a running cost is Rs 5 for each km. The CTU’s main objective to go for electric buses is to reduce pollution. The administration has handed over the shortcomings to the manufacturer and asked them to remove all of them and after that, there will be another trial to check it.

Punjab government on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of India (GoI) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) for affordable air travel. This is done under the country’s flagship programme UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik), in the presence of Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Under this people will get new air routes from Punjab soon.

UDAN is regional air connectivity scheme (RCS) which seeks to make flying affordable by connecting unserved and under-served airports. Now with the help of this scheme flying is now affordable for people.

Air Ports That Would Be Connected Under This Scheme:

Under Udan Scheme traveller can buy tickets at Rs. 2500 only. This scheme is launched to make flying affordable. From 9 seats to around 40 seats can be booked by the single user under this scheme. The four airports have been connected under the scheme through five proposals. Delhi-Pathankot-Delhi and Delhi-Ludhiana-Delhi, also by Alliance Air, would be made operational by July 2017. In addition, Delhi-Adampur-Delhi by Spicejet will be operationalized by August 2017 and Delhi-Ludhiana-Delhi by Deccan would become operational by September 2017. All the four airports from these cities that will be connected under this scheme are:

• Bathinda
• Ludhiana
• Pathankot
• Adampur

What  Will be the Benefits:

In this plan the requirement Viability Gap Funding (VGF)will be shared by central government and state government in 80:20 ratio. The VGF for Punjab state (state share) would work out to Rs 3 crore (approximate) per annum. There are some benefits of this memorandum for the people:

• It would help the state explore untapped commercial potential in the border areas to create huge job opportunities for the state’s unemployed youth.
• One lakh seats would be made available to passengers under the scheme,
• 50% i.e. 50,000 seats would be under fare cap which is concessional fares.
