Recently I had the opportunity to visit Krishna Chat in Sector-34. We were all sitting in Sector-35. And thought why eat the same processed food again? Let us try something new and a friend recommended the place. And we figured well, why not? So one short car ride and 10 minutes later, there we were.

Location Of Krishna Chat in Sector-34:

Located in the bay shops of Sector-34, there is not much place here to stand, let alone sit. We went around 5:30 pm on a Sunday. All you see is the place bustling with people and you instantly have high expectations of the place.

What we had:

A plate of Bhel Puri and a plate of Aloo Tikki

Verdict:

The plate of Bhel Puri was filled to the brim. It was enough for two people to eat to their satisfaction. What I really liked about the snack was that all the ingredients seemed really fresh. The Sev was really crunchy. Further, it had a lot of peanuts which is very rare to see. The serving was really generous and gave the bhel the extra crunch that it needed. However, I wish the dish had some sort of freshness added to it. There was no relief in the dish to the mouth. That could certainly have been better.

The aloo tikki was served piping hot. It also had a generous topping of a white gram on it. However, the best part of the snack was that the tikki was really crispy on the outside and really soft on the inside. Further, the dressing was curd was really fresh. You could actually judge by the taste that it was all really fresh.

I really wish I could have also tried the golgappas as most of the crowd seemed to be savoring it. But there is always a next time!

Krishna Chat in Sector-34
Krishna Chat in Sector-34

Verdict: If you really like street food, you should definitely

give this place a try. It is nothing out of this world but it is really old school and you will like every bit of it.

Price Points: Every dish costs Rs 40 each.

Momos: A steamed Dimsum with a juicy & tasty flavoring inside paired with finger-licking Chutneys. Originated and evolved in countries like Tibet, Nepal, and China; Momos today had taken an Indian Avatar. All the three names Momo, Dumpling, or Dimsum are just the same names to us Indians.

A quick question for you… How many momos spots you know in town?

Probably 20 or more. It’s because the love for momo is ubiquitous. Like, who doesn’t’ love momos right? Even the friends who say I don’t love momo still eats more than half of Dimsum from your plate.

Image result for momos eating gifs

The unimaginable & delightful flavor has taken over millions of hearts and ruled their stomach. This savory dish has become a passion for food enthusiastic across north India in no time. In fact today one cannot cross a street without spotting at least one ‘Momo Vala Bhaiya’ selling this delicious delicacy.

But, here we are not questioning the love or the availability of your momo, instead of the nutritional chart of your momo, the health benefits, and the safety status of your favorite snack!!

Why? Obviously because of…

  1. the whole pandemic drama we just finally started to get over with! And,
  2. To opt for healthier and tasty eating habits so we don’t become couch potatoes in our 40s

Let’s know our Momos/Dumpling/Dimsum a little more!

Dumplings are of two types: fried and steamed.

A post shared by DIMSUM BOX (@dimsumboxindia)

We think that momo can be healthy, particularly if they are not fried. But that’s not entirely true! The maida we consume is known to raise bad cholesterol which raises our blood pressure in the body. This increased blood sugar level and then dropping it down is no different than a dangerous roller coaster ride for your body. Also, maida is often bleached with chemicals like chlorine gas, benzoyl peroxide, and other bleaches. All this sounds scary, right?

The real dilemma is for those momo lovers who can’t resist the cravings and are also health-conscious. Don’t worry! We got a solution for you!

All you need to do is grab your keys and drive to the nearest DIMSUM BOX outlet. Here’s Why?

A post shared by DIMSUM BOX (@dimsumboxindia)

  1. They have only Wheat momos aka Atta Momos which are a perfect alternative to strike a balance between health! Whole wheat flour is rich in dietary fiber and protein, while Maida (Refined flour) isn’t much though! both of these macro-nutrients are essential nutrients that are required for a healthy body.
  2. Old Players: They are home to our beloved Dumplings introduced by the dumpling hood! (Yes, you heard it right! The revamped version of the Dumpling Hood is now called DIMSUM BOX!)
  3. No maida at all. For the modern millennial who is a party and diet freak at the same time, they use all-purpose flour (Atta) for all their Dimsum preparations.
  4. Crafted with expertise: They have been doing this for 8+ years. So, they know their craft perfectly!
  5. Say No to Deep Fried, and yeah to Pan Tossed. They don’t serve Fried Momos. Instead, They serve Pan tossed dim sum to satisfy your cravings for street style fried momos.
  6. This dim sum recipe has no fat except some oil that is used for greasing the pan. So overall a no fat healthy dim sum recipe.

What’s on the Platter?

Here you can have veggies, spinach, mushroom, broccoli, paneer, chicken, mutton, and more. You name it, they have it! Ain’t this awesome! right?

For all the travel junkies, we have good news for you. You will be mixing adrenaline with tasty finger-licking food.

The UT Administration is considering a sky dining proposal where the first such restaurant will be opened at a height of 165 ft with a capacity of 24 persons at any given time.

UT Adviser Manoj Parida said the project was under consideration to give a boost to the tourism sector in the city. He said they had identified three locations — Sukhna Lake, Kaimbwala village, and Leisure Valley — to start the project, but the Forest Department raised objection with the sites at Sukhna Lake and Kaimbwala. He, however, said a final decision on the terms and conditions and the site would be taken in a meeting soon.

Daman Kapoor, MD, DSH Bliss Adventures Pvt Ltd, who proposed to give a new experience to people in the city, said it would take 90 seconds or less for the foodies to reach the height and come back. Their safety and security would be the utmost priority, he said, adding that a group of visitors would stay mid-air for nearly 40 minutes.  The price of the ticket would be finalized in a meeting with the UT officials, which could be in the range of Rs2,500 to Rs4,000. He said they could start the restaurant as soon as they get the approval from the Administration.

I love pizza. It is the most beautiful thing in the world because no matter what, pizza is always there for you. I had previously reviewed Smokin Joe’s Pizza here but I am always on a quest for the perfect pizza. This journey took me to the Pizza Hut – Elante.

Pizza Hut - Elante
Pizza Hut – Elante

First impressions of Pizza Hut – Elante:

The Pizza Hut – Elante is unlike any other fast food joint. Why? Because it doesn’t look like one. It looks like an informal restaurant. There is one waitress at the front who is taking care of everything. She is guiding you to your table, handing you the menu, getting you water, taking your order, serving it to you, cleaning your table in between courses and handling the bill counter. Phew! And all this while serving all the other tables!!Pizza Hut - Elante

What we ordered:

Since we were two people, we ordered a King Size meal. The King Size Meal consists of the main course, an appetiser and a beverage or a soup. For soup, we ordered Cream of Mushroom. It was quite a treat for my taste buds. Generally, vegetarians like me end up having the likes of hot n sour or manchow soup. But this soup was very nicely prepared and certainly did not feel like you were eating at a fast food chain!Pizza Hut - Elante

Next, we had a veggie supreme pizza along with cheesy paneer pockets. The pizza, if you ask me, if amongst the better ones served at fast food joints. It was fresh, cheesy and had loads of toppings. The edges too were really soft and not floury at all. However, the big let down of the meal was the paneer pockets. I honestly tried it with the view of experimenting instead of having the usual garlic bread. But boy, do I regret it. It was really messy to eat and did not add much flavour to the entire meal at all.

Other than that, I suppose I was really happy with my meal.

Verdict:

Would I come here again? I am not sure. Maybe. Do I prefer it over other multinational pizza chains? Definitely.

Price points:

Rs 1066 for the King Size Meal (Including taxes).

If you have ever been to Delhi, or more specifically the Connaught Place, chances are that you know about Boombox Cafe. Located in the heart of Delhi, Boombox Cafe is a favourite with most Delhites. So when you hear that it is coming to Chandigarh, you have to visit it.

Boombox is known for its laidback ambience and amazing live music. The one in Chandigarh truly lives up to its name. What I see when I enter Boombox are its quirky interiors and the music. By the time I reach, local band Mridang is performing. So I take a seat and start scanning the place.

First impressions at Boombox Cafe:

It is really spacious and tastefully lit up. What catches my attention is this bicycle on a wall with wonderful lights. It is the only light source in that corner and looks wonderfully amazing.

Boombox Cafe in Chandigarh
Boombox Cafe in Chandigarh

Before I begin to order, our attendant leaves a bottle of mineral water on our table. Upon inquiry, he tells me that their RO is not working. So I ask him if this Rs 75 bottle of Bisleri (which comes to Rs. 100 with taxes and totally illegal, btw) will be charged to our bill and he says yes. Taken aback, I ask him what is the customer’s fault if their RO is non-functional. So he rushes to his manager and after 5-10 minutes comes and says it won’t be charged to our tab.

What we ordered:

Looking for a change from the regular hot n sours and manchow, we decided to order Cream of Mushroom soup. While you are at Boombox, be sure that your order takes quite some time to arrive. But with a great band like Mridang playing, you actually don’t mind the wait.

Finally, our soup arrives. First impressions? It looks really appetising. It is hot, fresh and really creamy and you instantly fall in love with it. My only complaint? It finishes too soon!

Next, for the mains, we ordered Fusilli Alfredo for lack of a better choice. If you go through their menu, you find that there is not much of a choice in the main course. You have your regular pasta, pizzas and Indian cuisine. So you are left wanting for more.

However, unlike most places, the pasta here does not disappoint at all. It is really creamy compared to the rest of the pasta I have had at other places in Chandigarh. But I am not sure why they used fusilli as their choice of pasta. I suppose penne pasta would have been a better choice. Anyway, at the end of the day, it tasted really good and that is all that matters. Further, their garlic bread was really sumptuous too, so that is a plus point!

Finally, to finish off our meal, we decided to order walnut brownie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Well, what can I say? If you are a chocolate lover, this is heaven for you. The brownie is so good and actually, the taste of walnut really comes through. The chocolate sauce has a good flavor and you fall in love with it at first sight. Don’t believe me? See it for yourself-

Verdict:

If you are looking for good food and music, Boombox Cafe is the place to be. You will not have any complaints and have a great time.

Price points:

Rs. 900 for two including taxes.

There are not a lot of quiet places to eat in Chandigarh. With the advent of live music bands, DJs etc, silence is something I crave at times. So my quest for the same led me to Virgin Courtyard Chandigarh.

Virgin Courtyard Chandigarh
Virgin Courtyard Chandigarh

Located on the back side of Sector-7, you may find it difficult to zero in on. But once you do, it is all worth it. It is dusk and there are so many candles and fire lamps outside. Further, the entrance has stone steps with water running beneath and by this time, you are already in love with this place.

You can sit inside or in the courtyard but when you have the latter option, why would you sit inside?! The courtyard is calm with a handful of tables, a small gushing fountain and loads of candles to set the mood for the evening. The fact that the place is so silent soothes one’s, soul.

Virgin Courtyard Chandigarh
Virgin Courtyard Chandigarh

What we ordered at Virgin Courtyard Chandigarh:

Since we weren’t very hungry, we first ordered a tomato consomme soup with vegetables. I should mention here that there is not a lot of variety of soups for vegetarians. There are two variations of tomato soups and a double mushroom soup. So there is not a lot of choices while ordering. While we were waiting, we were served focaccia bread with tomato salsa (which was in the house). I loved the bread and the salsa, even though the salsa was a bit too cold for my liking. But it is a nice treat, nevertheless.

Soon after our soups arrived. First impressions- they look lovely. The taste is exactly what you expect from a consomme but sadly, our Indian taste buds are hardly accustomed to it. So if you tend to stick with tastes that you know, this is not for you.

Virgin Courtyard Chandigarh
Virgin Courtyard Chandigarh

Next, we ordered arancini. These are small crispy balls stuffed with cheese and rice that get your taste buds salivating. They are served with extremely delicious dips, chutneys and salads that you feel like having more.

By the time it is time to leave, it is pitch dark and as I look up into the sky, there are a plethora of stars and I do not feel like leaving. Maybe, this is the charm of the place.

Verdict:

If you are not into trying something new, this is not the place for you. But if you love to experiment, this place should be on the top of your list. Do visit it, especially for the ambience of the place and the courteous staff!

Price points:

Around Rs 700 for two for a two-course meal including taxes.
