Can I get an amen from all my fellow chandigarhians when I say that this town is the perfect blend of all things traditional as well as contemporary. You name it and We have it- food, fashion, night life, theatre, culture, scenery and so much more. We know our Gucci’s and Prada’s but we can rock a Patiala suit and Punjabi jutti with equal grace and poise.

Our city has the finest restaurants which serve a variety of international cuisines but nothing beats the tandoori roti and butter chicken of the dhabas that gives you a gastronomic experience that is one of its kind. Similarly, when we arrive at a party or a club we show off our “gangsta” dance moves while drake or Niki Minaj are crooning in the background but 30 minutes into the party and we are killing it with our bhangra on a badshah or a Yo Yo Honey Singh track. Basically, this city and its people are downright “Desi” at heart and absolutely proud of it.

So there are a few things that one should not miss when visiting this city.

A visit to Panjab University & the celebrated student Centre or “Stu-c”

student center panjab university chandigarh- stu c pu chd

This University is my alma mater but I truly feel that this landmark place is totally worth a visit not only because of its historical and architectural significance but just to experience the bustling energy and the aura of this place. Also, you cannot miss the lip-smacking food of stu-c which is a mini food court for students and I’m not bluffing when I say that you can satisfy your palate as well as your tummy under 150 bucks at this place.

Sukhna lake- Our very own Marine Drive

sukhna-lake-chandigarh

The Sukhna lake is Chandigarh’s prized possession and a walk along this reservoir during the evening with the cool wind blowing in your face gives the most soothing feeling. Being a famous tourist attraction, it is thronged by sketch artists, vendors of all kinds, street musicians and other entertainers to attract the crowd. The facility of boating is also available but nothing beats the serene sunrise and the beautiful sunset at the lake which adds to its scenic beauty.

The Himalayan Expressway and Timber trail

The Himalayan Expressway parwanoo

The smooth highway that connects Chandigarh to Shimla offers a fun drive through the mountains. The timber trail resort nestled in the hills of parwanoo acts as the perfect pit stop for the city dwellers looking for a weekend getaway. The main attraction of this resort lies in the 1.8 km cable car ride to a mountain top with its breathtaking and picturesque view of the mountain scenery.

The Sector 8-9-10 Gehri Route

geri route chandigarh

While talking of drives, it shall be catastrophic not to mention the sector 8-9-10 stretch which is full of youngsters cruising in their fancy cars with the music blaring. The lively atmosphere of this area grows on you and uplifts your spirit.

A stroll through the Rock Garden and the Rose garden

Rose-Garden-chandigarh

Chandigarh is full of gardens and open spaces but the world famous Rock Garden is one of its Kind. It is considered as the brainchild of the renowned artist Nek Chand who built sculptures from scrap and recycled waste material to create art. These sculptures situated in the garden are a work of ingenuity and beauty which tends to leave people awestruck. Similarly, Rose Garden is a paradise for nature lovers and gardening enthusiasts with the variety of exquisite flowers and other flora on display.

Experience culture at Tagore Theatre

Tagore Theatre chandigarh

The highly acclaimed Tagore theatre hosts the finest plays and theatrical performances in the country.  Local as well as international artists can be found mesmerizing the audience by exhibiting their talent here.  This place is sheer bliss for dramatics and theatre fanatics and the recitals here are a visual treat for the eyes.

Shopping Spree at sector 17

sector-17-chandigarh

The first thing anybody associates with Chandigarh is sector 17. It is glorified in many songs as well and rightly so because it pretty much forms the essence of this city. No mall or Branded shopping complex can compare to the shopping experience you get in this place. The vivacious vibes which this place exuberates is infectious and you cannot help feeling a sense of happiness while visiting sector 17. From phulkari and Punjabi juttis to high-end fashion accessories, you will find anything and everything here.

I can go on and on about a hundred other things to do in Chandigarh because there is so much more to this city but I’m going to sign off with one last thought that Chandigarh is indeed city beautiful in every way, you got to breathe it, live it, experience it and you shall surely fall in love with it!

The fee hike in  PU caused tensed situation among the students. Earlier, the protesting students boycotted classes but this protest got out of control when agitators clashed with police and then to stop them police used water cannons and did lathi charge on them. To retaliate students pelted stones on the police. Many students, police, and journalists were injured during this protest. Students should know that violence can never give solutions and that why NGO, ‘I AM STILL HUMAN’ has taken initiative to give some solutions to generate some revenue in PU without hiking the fees. This NGO believes that students are future of the country and their active participation in any matter can generate some positive ideas. The Solutions Proposed By The NGO, 'I AM STILL HUMAN' For Solving The Financial Crunch Of Panjab University

With this article, we are going to bring your kind attention towards where PU is lacking and what it can do to generate revenue without hiking fees and troubling students, as the problem is related to the crunch of revenue because the center government has stopped paying grants to PU three years ago.

Where is Panjab University lacking?

It is the duty of higher authorities to share or try to remove the problems that are related to students but rather than to help students, authorities are increasing fees and this time unprecedented hike is observed in the fees. If the university is facing any financial crunch, there is no need to put the students in trouble who come from weaker sections.

No productive talks:

Negotiation and discussions will help us to get some productive results rather than to not attending students who want to share their problem. All the students who are showing their anger through protest should have used their energy to give solutions to them and use it for some beneficial results. Due to this protest, only students have to face the losses like teaching was affected in all departments in Panjab University.

“Negotiation and discussions are the greatest weapons we have for promoting peace and development”, By Nelson Mandela

Lack of planning:

Center government has stopped granting funds to University before 3 years ago but the university did nothing to face upcoming situations related to financial crunch. They should have planned something productive that can help them to generate some revenues.

No business sustainability model:

If you are teaching business in your university then why don’t you implement it to generate some revenue? University only spending more money rather than to remove wastage of money.

Solutions for solving PU’s financial crunch

There are some solutions proposed by the NGO, ‘I AM STILL HUMAN’ for solving the financial crunch of Panjab University:

  • Charge more for luxuries, not for education: There should be no hike in the education fees because students come here for affordable studies. But if fees will increase 6 times it will be tough for the weaker section to get a good education. so change more for luxuries, not for education.
  • Commercial Advertisements in Panjab University:  Colleges and universities are turning towards the alternative ways of generating revenues and commercial advertisements in Panjab University can generate revenues. The advertisers must provide a service to the students and/or generate some income to the university.
  • Commercializing WiFi System: They can generate revenues by commercializing WiFi system.
  • Generate more cost-savings ideas: Invite staff, faculty, and students to come up with revenue-generating and money-saving ideas for your institution. Negotiation and discussion are the musts.
  • PU is a big marketplace in its own: PU is a big marketplace in its own and university can make a good business model to generate money like by hosting some revenue generating events.

Don’t make PU a battlefield and try to solve this problem with some good solutions. Violence can never be a solution for any problem. Only cost saving ideas can help PU in this situation.

The keynote speaker for the event was Mr David Lelliot, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Chandigarh. His address was followed by an interaction session where the students asked their higher education related queries to Mr Lelliot. To aid the students in their financial needs, Mr Lelliot talked about the plethora of scholarships available to international students especially Indian students. T’emmêle pas, a circus show was organized by Alliance Francaise at the law auditorium, Panjab University yesterday. T’emmêle pas which is French for “Don’t tangle yourself” is a circus show where acrobatics and jugglery get involved with the dance, the theater, the mime and the music hall. The whole approach was in a farcical way. On the stage, there was a man and a woman. And the audience were left wondering if they are a couple? Friends? Brother and sister? Through the performance, the audience enjoyed the relationship progress of these comic people.

T'emmele pas at Panjab University

The show which was attended by students of various schools and students of the French language from various colleges across the Tri-City left the audience in splits. Also in attendance was Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean, International Students, Panjab University who said she hoped to see further similar events in the University for students to enjoy.

The show was attended by students from various schools including Carmel Convent, Gurukul Global and Strawberry Fields.

MEET THE ACTORS

T'emmele pas at Panjab University

I also managed to catch up with the actors of the play- Hugo Varett and Anouck Wroblewski. Here are the excerpts from the interview-

Great show, guys! So where will you be performing next?

Amritsar. We have already performed at Kathmandu and Chennai. We will also be performing at Delhi and Pune soon.

How do you guys balance yourselves so well? With all the acrobatics and the stunts?

Practice (laughs). Lots of practice. We began when we were young.

At what age did you start?

She started when she was 8 years old. I was nine. So that is almost twenty years ago.

Since when have you two been working together?

Almost 7 years now. We write our own plays.

What inspired you to take up this art form? The choreography and the acrobatics?

So many things. (Sighs) So many things. We can find inspiration everywhere. At a moment, we write something, or like see something we like. When you begin as an artist, you have to see, analyze and understand everything. What another artist is talking about. How they do something. All of that can be inspiring. Personally, I like English humor and Italian theater. Each act of the play was inspired. In the last act, we tried to do musical comedy.

How difficult is it to capture the attention of children? With the advent of technology, has it become more difficult?

The difference between technology and this show is…when we are in reality the communication becomes easier. Children are always looking forward to new things. Whenever we are performing for children, we change some jokes that we feel are not appropriate for them.

What do children ask for the most after the show?

Well, they generally say thank you and tell us how cool the show was. But almost always they ask for a lot of selfies! (laughs)
