This decision is taken because in summers sun is high and there is direct sun rays, so to avoid sun they have decided that trekking will be finished before rise in temperature.

A large beautiful area full of flora and fauna, a natural reserve forest near village Kansal located outskirts of Chandigarh towards the hills is called Kansal Forest. Entry to this forest is restricted because of the presence of wild animals and firstly you have to take permission for the trekking. A rest house, surrounded by beautiful grassy lawns and flower beds, is located inside this forest.

Nepli Forest:

Nepli forest is Located at very short distance from Kansal forest and this forest is little more wilder than the Kansal. It is very beautiful place for trekking lovers because it is surrounded by small hills, with thick forest and also full of wild life. Who doesn’t love the Palm trees and the ocean breeze? Well, we all do. The way they sway with the wind tranquilizes the soul. As a matter of fact, Palm trees are stronger than any other trees, because they do not have branches. Their leaves can flex easily with minimal resistance. This is the reason why Palm trees are the embodiment of mental strength as well. 

What astounds me is, that from a tree so noble, comes a product most of the world resent – Palm oil. Although their resentment has mounted on some misleading myths. And we are here to correct those fallacious facts, so you can reap the total health benefits of palm oil. Before digging deep, let’s talk about what is palm oil?

What is Palm oil?

Palm oil is edible vegetable oil, mostly used in the food industry. It is plant-derived and obtained from the fruit of the oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis). The fruits of palm trees yield two types of oil. One which goes by the name crude oil comes from squeezing the fresh fleshy fruit and the other called palm kernel oil by crushing the kernel present in the middle of the fruit. 

Palm trees are considered ornamental trees, which were brought to south-east Asia about 100 years ago. Presently, Indonesia and Malaysia make up 85% of the global supply of palm oil. As a matter of fact, three-quarters of the total land area in Malaysia is under tree cover (73.7%), and of this total 56% is natural forest. 

Where is Palm oil?

Palm oil is increasingly sought after because of its numerous uses. It is conventionally used as an ingredient in confectionery and ice cream. Palm oil is also a constituent of soap and detergent. 

The bottom line is Palm oil is in nearly everything. It is a constituent of more than 50% of packed products. Be it frozen nuggets, chocolates, shampoos, lipstick, toothpaste. Everything. It’s also used as a biofuel in many countries of the world.

Palm oil is an all-rounder oil that has multiple properties and functions which makes it so useful. It is semi-solid at room temperature making it ideal for being part of sauces and spreads. it does not oxidize easily and hence gives products a longer shelf-life. it’s stable at hot temperatures giving the fried products a crunchy taste. In African countries, where palm oil is a native, it is used widely as cooking oil, just like we use mustard oil.

Dispelling the myths about Palm oil

Myth 1- Palm oil is a top-ranked carcinogen.

The myth had been around for a while now, that many countries had refused from importing it for usage in the food industry because palm oil being a carcinogen.

This is a myth. And the myth buster is the fact that the sunflower oil we use most of the time becomes carcinogenic if used twice for frying, whereas Palm oil can be used as many as 8 times for frying. The carcinogenic nature of any oil is dependent on the business practices of an industry rather than on the oil itself. And even business do not use any oil multiple times, because it ruins the taste of the product, ultimately leading to customer dissatisfaction.

Myth 2- Palm oil and Palm trees cultivation is the only cause of deforestation. 

 The European Parliament resolution 2017 on palm oil and deforestation concluded a debate on the possibility of controlling palm oil imports. The article was published in the newspaper Le Monde on April 3, 2017, suggesting the conversion of land to oil palm plantations alone is responsible for 40% of the loss of natural forest cover around the world.

But when the source of this data was further researched, the truth came out to be that palm oil trees are responsible for only 2.3% of deforestation. Also, the data of that published article was never referenced.

Myth 3- Palm oil is high in saturated fat

Saturated fats are mostly found in animal products and indeed its consumption can raise blood cholesterol which isn’t good for the heart. But please note that palm oil has also had mono-unsaturated fats and little polyunsaturated ones which are considered good types of fats. They lower cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease.

Bottom line- saturated fats and unsaturated fats of palm oil cancel each other’s effect. Hence palm oil has a neutral fat content.

Palm oil is harvested as red palm oil, generally called palm oil with 50% of saturated fats while other is called fractionated palm oil with 80% of saturated fats.

In the webinar hosted by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), I learned palm oil from the fruit is different from palm oil from its kernel, which contains about 80% saturated fats.

Benefits of Palm oil

Palm is an exceptional crop with an incomparable oil yield per hectare. It produces a large scale quantity of inexpensive all-rounder oil, which is desired by both the bio fuel and agro-food industry. 

Palm oil reduces the chances of vitamin A deficiency, increased blood pressure, high cholesterol aging, and more. Palm oil has a balanced amount of saturated and unsaturated fats. Also, the oil extracted from palm kernels and seeds is loaded with Vitamin E and natural antioxidants.

Palm oil is preferred over butter because it improves metabolism helps you shed unnecessary kilos.

Why Palm oil and it’s debatable nature caught my attention?

I was honored to be a part of the webinar conducted by MPOC – Malaysian Palm Oil Council where Dr. Bhavna Shah Country Representative for India & Sri Lanka – Malaysian Palm Oil Council enthusiastically spoke about Palm oil and its benefits. The session indeed cleared all the Dispelling Myths of the Palm oil lurking around in the industry. This online bloggers event was well organized and supported by Ms. Priyanka Patel & Mr. Rauf Sayed from Unbox Concepts.

Ms. Bhavna Shah started with a curious case of a young boy who once participated in a Science Fair. The story has its own high and low points but ultimately concluded that we look upon what is put forth to us, instead of digging deep for the actual answers.

The event moved and shook my soul to the extent, that I spent my time after the event reading extensively about palm oil.

Do you know – When properly developed and maintained, palm oil estates can play an important contribution in improving the lives of the people in rural areas of the tropics. The World Bank estimates that with a population increase of 11.6% and a 5% increase in per capita consumption, an extra 28 million tonnes of vegetable oils will have to be produced annually by 2020.

Malaysia considers the commercial potential of palm oil as a flexible and sought after commodity. Malaysian Government has also recently pledged to back the Malaysian Palm Oil Wildlife Conservation Fund to the tune of RM20 million, equivalent to £4.19 million, and it has initiated a program to set aside a further 300,000 hectares for the conservation of tropical rainforest including areas where the orangutan can be found.

The first thing that comes in our mind after listening to Palm Oil is “its a bad oil for our health’. Have you ever feel that too, if yes then you need to clear your facts about palm oil. Recently, I attended an event about Palm Oil which is organized by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) and represented by Bhavna Shah, Country Head (India & Sri Lanka) MPOC.

  Bhavna Shah, Country Head (India & Sri Lanka) MPOC Before this event, I never realised that we’re actually consuming palm oil indirectly via so many other food & beverages. And This event cleared many myths and facts about palm oil.

What is Palm Oil:

It’s an edible vegetable oil that comes from the fruit of palm oil trees, the scientific name is Elaeis guineensis. Two types of oil can be produced; crude palm oil comes from squeezing the fleshy fruit, and palm kernel oil which comes from crushing the kernel (Seed) in the middle of the fruit. Palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet, found in many products i.e. Frozen Desserts, Cookies, Instant Noodles, lipstick, soaps, detergents, Shampoo and even in ice cream. Palm oil is in nearly everywhere – it’s in close to 50% of products then why there is a fuss about it. The simple answer to this is “People are not aware about it” less awareness leads to myths & misconceptions. So Let’s check some interesting facts and myths of palm oil people don’t know about.

Myths & Facts About Palm Oil

• It is not good for health: In actual, Palm oil has many health benefits, including protecting brain function, reducing heart disease risk factors and also improving vitamin A status.
• Palm oil is harmful to the environment: The fact that the entire country of Malaysia, one of the world’s leading palm oil producers, is a net carbon sink meaning that it does not contribute to greenhouse gases. Malaysian palm oil has been produced sustainably and responsibly for more than 100 years, and its forest cover is actually increasing.
• Palm oil is unhealthy because it is high in saturated fat: Palm oil has higher levels of saturated fat compared with other plant oils such as olive oil and sunflower oil. Saturated fat is commonly found in animal fats and excessive consumption can raise total blood cholesterol levels, which can raise the risk of heart disease. However, it also contains mono-unsaturated fats and small amounts of polyunsaturated fats, which are generally considered “good” fats that can help improve blood cholesterol levels and decrease our risk of heart disease.

The event was organised in Sip ‘n’ dine’ banquet hall Chandigarh. After her session there were few fun activities lined up and all related with palm oil. For fun activities went to 2-3 different-different nearby restaurants. We all were divided into team of 5. The first activity was at Crazy Town restaurant where we had to solve the questionnaire related to palm oil. Then for the second activity, we went to The SafeHouse Lounge, sector 26 Chandigarh, where we need to do blindfolded food tasting & figure out food ingredient. The main thing about this blindfolded tasting is the food, where palm oil is used instead of olive oil or any other. After eating food made of palm oil I couldn’t feel any difference while having the same food that I eat on a regular basis with any other oils. In the third activity, we got a few ingredients & palm oil and need to make a salad. Our team made a salad and gave the name to it “ Tiranga Basket Salad” at The finch restaurant. We also used raw palm oil for Salad dressing and I was surprised that it increased the taste of Salad. And the last activity was again at Sip ‘n’ dine where we’ve to finish frozen dessert which was again made with palm oil,  Chocolate items like Ferro Rosher, Hide & Seek, Choco Fills and Nutella. Overall, we had a great day with some learning session about Palm Oil & its benefits. The conclusion of the event and what I learnt that  “The lack of awareness about anything leads to myths & misconceptions.” Palm oil is bad for health due to myths in our society. The civic body has provided a 20% rebate to residential property taxpayers and a 10% rebate to commercial entities for the fiscal year 2024-25. The last date for paying your property tax in Chandigarh is May 31.

After that, if they fail to pay, they will have to pay a 25% penalty over the entire amount besides 12% interest. Additionally, an outstanding tax from the date the tax bill is issued until the date the payment will be made.

For property taxpayers, timely reminders will be sent through these modes to update them about pending dues. “This would help people to make their payments on time, and without inviting any penalties,” an MC official said.

An Online Portal for Chandigarh Residents To Pay Property Tax

No need to queue up in long lines as the Chandigarh Administration has launched a portal/website for the citizens for the Payment of Property Tax in Chandigarh. The Online Electricity Bill and water bill facility will help citizens make these bill payments from their homes only.

This facility was started on Aug 2015 and inaugurated by UT adviser Vijay Dev. You can pay your property tax via net banking, debit card or credit card.

Steps To Pay Property Tax Online in Chandigarh

You can pay your house tax online through the e-sampark official website.

1. Go/Open the official website sampark.chd.nic.in

First and foremost, open the online website sampark.chd.nic.in to proceed with your online property tax payment.

2. Click on the Quick Pay Option & then Property Tax

Secondly, under the ‘Quick Pay’ drop-down, click on the Property Tax.

3. Read all the instructions carefully

Further, the next page will show you the details/instructions on how to pay property tax online in Chandigarh. Read all the details carefully and then click on the proceed button. On the next page, there are two options for Property ID and House No.

1. Search your property details with Property ID

Your property details will appear on the screen and you have to click on send OTP(One Time Password) which will be sent to your registered mobile number. Then enter it in the OTP window to make a successful online payment.

2. Search your property details with House No & Sector No

Under this, a list of property details will appear on your screen and after clicking on your details your property ID will appear then you have to click on send OTP(One Time Password) which will be sent to your registered mobile number which you have to enter in OTP window to make a successful online payment.

4. Redirect to the Main Payment Page

Lastly, after filling in your details in whichever mode you select, the page will redirect to the main Payment page where you can also check all your property details. Now, select any payment option and you will be able to pay your property tax.
